Cali

Combining historic beauty and modern design, Cali is one of the most spectacular cities in Colombia. The city is one of the primary tourist destinations in the country for all of these reasons. Below is information that will help you in planning your excursion to Cali Colombia.

Cali Location & Population

Cali is the third largest city in Colombia with 2.7 million residents. South of Bogota, Cali is located about 1,000 meters above sea level nestled in the Cauca Valley. To the west of the city runs a long, beautiful river known as the Cauca. The eastern portion of the city is bordered by the Western Mountain Range. Because of the mountains, the city is blocked from much of the ocean’s humidity but does benefit from a comfortable breeze. As a result, Cali Colombia is one of the most comfortable cities in the country.

Cali Transportation

Getting around the city is becoming easier than ever. In November 2008, the city is supposed to be launching a mass transit system known as the MIO (Massivo Integrado de Occidente). The city has an effective bus system which you can use to travel conveniently around Cali. Most of the best tourist destinations will either be found on the bus or MIO routes.

Exciting Things to Do in Cali Colombia

While enjoying the city of Cali, you’ll find plenty of great activities to fill your days. Depending on when you visit the city, you can enjoy a number of events. For example, the La Feria de Cali is an annual fair held in the city between December 25th and 30th. During the fair, you can enjoy salsa concerts, parades of people and horses, and even bullfights.

If you prefer to visit Cali in the summer, you don’t have to miss out on an event. In July, the Summer Salsa Festival is held and is a place for the groups and dancers from all over the world to compete.

Exploring Museums and History

Because of Cali’s rich history, if you are a traveler interested in the pre-Colombian past of the country and the area then you’ll find plenty to enjoy here. One of the most beautiful old mansions in the city – Casa de la cultura Proartes – has been completely restored and is now a cinema where visitors can surround themselves in history while also enjoying the arts.

For more traditional museums, you can explore the Museo Arquologico La Merced which contains a wealth of pre-Colombia artifacts that have been revealed through archaeological excavations in the area. Cali is also home to a unique museum of religious art known as the Museo Religioso y Colonial de San Francisco.

Festive Locations in Cali

Although Cali is probably best known for its history and its religious art and architecture, that doesn’t mean you won’t find some amazing night life in the city as well. The so-called Zona Rosa (Pink Zone) is one of the hot spots in the city. Here you’ll find a large number of nightclubs, restaurants, and hotels to enjoy. Plus, you’ll be within walking distance of one of the best shopping malls in Cali Colombia, Chipichape. A more upscale area in the city is known as Granda which is home to more fashionable restaurants and boutiques. Many other areas of the city, such as Zona Rosa and Granda, are almost solely dedicated to tourists. These areas are also some of the safest places to explore. Due to the demand from tourists and residents, two new shopping centers are under construction in Cali Colombia.

Don’t Miss Cali Hot Spots

Of course if you’re interested in checking out one of the best parts of Cali, you should visit the historic areas of downtown. For visitors who enjoy old church architecture, they will find a wide variety of photo opportunities in the area, including the beautiful La Ermita and La Merced. While you are in this area, be sure to thoroughly explore the La plaza de Caycedo which is a historic center filled with tourist attractions, such as the Saint Francis chuch, and many parks, museums, and monuments. While you are in the area, you should also take a photograph of the magnificent Cristo Rey (Christ the King) statue which stands above the city.
