Basic Country Informations

When planning a trip to Colombia, there are some important facts you should know. This useful tourist information can be found below.

Entering Colombia

Most people visiting Colombia enter the country via plane. Many major cities around the world offer flights directly into the main cities of Colombia. However, you will need a passport from your home country in order to enter. If you are a U. S. citizen, you will not need a visa unless you are staying more than 60 days. Once you arrive, you can take one of the affordable taxis to your destination.

Exiting Colombia

When you leave the country, you will again need to show your passport. If you lose your passport during the visit, a new one must be obtained before you will be allowed to leave. You may also be charged an exit tax at the airport. Some airlines combine this fee into the cost of your plane ticket; others do not. The average cost is between $50 to $70 USD but varies based on the exchange rate.

Another important piece of tourist information if you are traveling with a child is that if you are not the parent or if both parents are not present, the birth certificate and a signed decree permitting the child to travel must be presented.

Overstaying & Colombian Customs

Although Colombia welcomes tourists, it does not take kindly to tourists who stay longer than permitted. If you wish to stay longer, you can request an extension. If you end up staying too long, you will be charged a fine that must be paid prior to leaving the country.

You must also be careful not to bring in or leave with too much in valuable goods or cash. The maximum amount is $10,000 USD. Anything over that amount will be confiscated by custom officials from Colombia.
