While the capital city may be one of the most popular destinations in Colombia, Medellin is not far behind. Word-of-mouth about the wonders offered by the city has spread so that now the tourism industry has truly begun to blossom here. Below you’ll find information about the city and advice on some of the must-see attractions to visit while enjoying Medellin.
Medellin Location & Population
Medellin is the second largest metropolitan area in Colombia with over 3 million residents. Like Bogota, Medellin is nestled within the heart of the country. However, it is not quite as elevated. The city is only 1,500 meters above sea level. Although located in the northern part of the Andes Mountains, the city can actually be found in the Acura Valley hence its reduced elevation. Thanks to its lower level and its protection from the mountains, the year round average temperature in Medellin is a comfortable 72 degrees Fahrenheit. This fact explains why the city is sometimes known as the City of Eternal Spring.
Medellin Transportation
Because the city is very modern, traveling around is convenient and safe. Medellin is home to the Metro System. Part of this system includes a unique sky train that not only provides reliable transportation but also an amazing panoramic view of Medellin. Taxis are also available, although some taxi drivers may “forget” to turn them on. Always be vigilant. The TuriBus which takes a route through all of the popular attractions for tourists and the Circular Coonatra are both alternative ways of getting around the city.
If you want to stay in Medellin for an extended period, you can always rent a car and visit some of the surrounding cities. You’ll have a beautiful view of the countryside on your trip which should be relatively safe in this part of Colombia.
Exciting Things to Do in Medellin
The city is always packed with great activities. For example, you can visit during the early part of August to enjoy the Flower Fair or you can watch open air movies every Saturday at the Parque de los deseos which is just one of the amazing parks in the city. In fact, Medellin is known for its gorgeous, sprawling public parks so make sure to enjoy them as you tour the city.
Exploring Museums and Culture
Like most Colombian cities, Medellin has a rich performing arts culture. While visiting, you can enjoy performances at the Metropolitan Theatre. The performers do choose well-known pieces for their acts. Museums are also quite numerous in the city. If you enjoy art, visit the Museo de Arte Moderno de Medllin (MAMM) or the Museo de Antioquia which is dedicated to the work of Fernando Botero, a well-known artist and sculptor.
Festive Locations in Medellin
If you’re looking for a party, you should visit Medellin between Thursday and Saturday because this is when most people go out to have a good time. Medellin does include a large number of nightclubs and bars but keep in mind that they close between 2 and 4 am. However, some techno cubs do have longer hours. If you have money to burn, head to Mangos which is the most notorious bar in Medellin Colombia thanks to its patronage by supposed Colombian mafia types. The bar is extremely costly though so have a drink or two, absorb the atmosphere, and head elsewhere. If you want to party on a Thursday night, go to a club called Babylon which offers all you can drink – that’s something you won’t find very often. For a more intense party, you should visit Carnivale. This is a popular rave spot with the music and partying lasting until 9 am the following morning.
Don’t Miss Medellin Favorite Spots
Of course, you absolutely must enjoy the Guatape Tour. Guatape was once the home of infamous Colombian Pablo Escobar. His now destroyed home and many other extravagant buildings are still located in the city. The city is only a 90 minute drive away from Medellin Colombia. Once you are there you’ll need to climb the staircase on the large rock because at the top you’ll find a delicious restaurant offering outdoor seating and amazing views in every direction. You definitely don’t want to forget your camera.
